NOTC USER PROFILE: FOR JACKSONVILLE’S DR. DOUGLAS GREEN, “IT’S ALL ABOUT ENHANCING PATIENT CARE”
Neuro-otologist Douglas Green believes that by putting “quality first, business success will follow.” The strategy must be working. He recently moved his thriving otology and neuro-otology clinic into a 100,000-square foot facility that features one of our new Neuro-Otologic Test Centers (NOTC). Dr. Green uses the state-of-the-art NOTC, incorporating our world-renowned Barany chair system and I-Portal® eye-tracking system, to conduct complete vestibular/neuro-otologic tests for a broad range of patients – from football players to kids to the elderly. “It’s all about enhancing patient care,” Dr. Green said. Read his profile here.
SPOTLIGHT: I-PORTAL® VNG SHOWCASED AT AUDIOLOGY CONFERENCE
Our recently introduced I-Portal® VNG (Video Nystagmography System) – designed for in-office, clinical eye-tracking tests to detect disease and diagnose balance disorders and evaluate dizziness complaints – is being showcased this week at the Audiology Now Conference (April 19-21) in Denver.
The I-Portal VNG uses high-speed (60-90Hz), 4D eye tracking, including torsion and pupillometry. It features lightweight and easy-to-use goggles, and provides detailed, high-resolution digital imaging of eye movements, along with instant analysis, comprehensive reporting and video recording. High-speed recording of eye movements – 60 to 90 frames per second, more than twice as fast as the human eye processes images – improves clinical accuracy for enhanced diagnosis. An expanded battery of tests includes all standard reimbursable ones. The analysis, reports and video recording to support insurance reimbursements from Medicare and third-party carriers are part of the package.

SBIR AWARDED FOR DEVELOPMENT OF DIABETIC RETINOPATHY TESTING DEVICE
We recently were awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the National Eye Institute (part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health) to advance a new patent-pending, non-invasive test for the early detection of diabetic retinopathy, the exclusive rights for which we recently secured from the University of Pittsburgh.
Combining Pitt’s unique eye-testing protocols with our patent-pending pupillometry technology is expected to make for a low-cost and promising early screen for diabetic retinopathy. UCLA’s Dr. Michael Gorin (see next news item, below) will help us engineer a prototype of a new testing device and will begin testing clinical patients to assess the effectiveness of the technology.
With the diabetes epidemic impacting millions around the world, a new generation of early-detection tests is certainly urgently required – indeed, some studies suggests that more than one half of those with diabetic retinopathy do not know they have diabetes.
This most recent SBIR grant, meanwhile, follows other similar grants we’ve received from the U.S. Department of Defense and other government agencies. One, from the U.S. Navy, involved developing new methods for dynamic visual acuity screening and training of air combat pilots using our Pursuit Tracker™ laser target generator device.
ON BOARD: WELCOME DR. MICHAEL GORIN
We’re delighted to welcome Dr. Michael Gorin to our Board of Advisors. Dr. Gorin holds the Harold and Pauline Price Chair in Chair in Ophthalmology and is a Professor of ophthalmology in the retina and vision science divisions at the University of California – Los Angeles’ David Geffen School of Medicine. Said Neuro Kinetics CEO Howison Schroeder: “As we enhance our current products and expand into serving a wider constituency of medical practitioners, Dr. Gorin’s insight and expertise will be invaluable. We’re honored that he is supporting us in our work.”
NEW VP, MANUFACTURING & OPERATIONS
We also recently welcomed Joseph M. Argyros as our new vice president, manufacturing and operations. Joe brings years of experience in the medical equipment field, including senior operations and engineering positions. An Army veteran, he served at Fort Bragg, N.C., and saw combat during Operation Desert Storm. Now he is focused on improving our manufacturing and operations processes, working to ensure that we exceed the expectations of our customers with each and every order.
